Community Interview: Unreal Warfare
Genuine Gamers (GG): Can you tell us what your gamertag is and why?
Unreal Warfare: My gamertag is Unreal Warfare. It originated from the original conept name for Gears of War when it was in early concept during the early years of the original Xbox lifespan. It was later used as a name for a game type for Unreal Tournament 3. I changed it to this when I disbanded my old clan due to personal interests. Past gamertags I’ve been known as are Unreal Havoc, which was my very first gamertag, and Havoc DOW, which was what I changed to when I founded Demons of War [DOW].
GG: Tell us a little about yourself? What do you work as or get up to in your spare time other than gaming?
Unreal Warfare: I serve in the Royal Artillery in the British Army as a Signaller in an Observation Party. My primary role is to call in artillery bombardments and airstrikes. When I’m not blowing stuff up in real life I do it in game on Rainbow 6 Vegas 2. I also teach Ninjutsu, which I’ve been doing for 9 years now, and I like to weight train and play football aswell.
GG: What made you get into gaming, and in particular Xbox 360?
Unreal Warfare: I’ve always been a gamer. My first experience was playing Scramble on a Tandy TRS-80 when I was a kid, but my main hook was Street Fighter 2 in the arcades. I was drawn to the Xbox 360 by Perfect Dark Zero, back in the day it was pretty amazing to play.
GG: How long have you been gaming for?
Unreal Warfare: Since I was around 9-10 years old.
GG: Can you describe your best Live experience and who/what it involved?
Unreal Warfare: My best experiences have to be with my old clan Demons of War back when we used to do battle on Gamebattles. We built ourselves around fair play and respect for others, despite the aproach alot of other clans took on the community. We had great teamwork and communication that saw us hit the top ten in our first season together.
GG: What’s your favourite game on the Xbox and roughly how many hours have you racked up?
Unreal Warfare: This one is easy. Rainbow 6 Vegas 2. I put in at least 4-5 hours most nights if not more.
GG: If you could make any changes to Xbox/Xbox Live, what would they be and why?
Unreal Warfare: It would definitely be to the party system. It’s ok but I hate going into a game and no one speaking at all. Xbox Live is just dead for the more social, or more team oriented, gamer nowadays. I mean who plays an online game to sit in silence?
GG: You’re on the Xbox Forums quite a lot. Do you have a favourite board that you visit or do you like to browse generally?
Unreal Warfare: I generally sit on the active threads section. I tend to make an appearance on other boards aswell though, especially the Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 boards.
GG: What do you think makes a game successful? And what do you think is the correct mixture of ingredients (such as single player, multiplayer, game modes, replay value etc)?
Unreal Warfare: Personally I think games sometimes try to hard to be great and lack what makes them fun in the end. Left 4 Dead did a really good job of being simple yet fun despite its criticism. I think developers need to start putting in more support for games post release though.
GG: What’s on your gaming radar for this year and what do you think will be the biggest game?
Unreal Warfare: To be honest I haven’t been keeping tabs on games much for this year. I’m looking forward to the remake of Chronicles of Riddick though. I think the biggest game has already past, Resident Evil 5, though Bioshock 2 might give it a run for its money.
GG: Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions and giving our readers an insight to what you do. Just one last question before you go though. If you could be any computer game character, who would you be and why?
Unreal Warfare: Commander Shephard hands down. I mean what’s not to like about saving the galaxy, and dating hot alien chicks, right?
GG: Thanks again!
