Community Interview: Oldtimer001

Have a read of our latest community interview, Oldtimer001:

How did you choose your gamertag?

I have been gaming for a long time. I wanted something to represent that along with my mildly quirky since of humor. I tried many variants but settled on my current tag.

How long have you been gaming and how did you get into it?

I’ve been gaming since 1977. My parents bought a Texas Instruments Pong home game system and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Comparing your first memories of gaming to what you experience now, how do they differ?
The mid-80’s through the mid-90’s was certainly a golden age of gaming with many great games. I feel that we are now in another golden era with this generation of consoles that are finally bringing their “A-game” with games. Many great game franchises have blossomed and made gaming today fun and exciting. Plus the much needed evolution of co-op game play.

What’s your favourite game on the Xbox 360 and what makes it your favourite?

I have a three-way tie here. Halo 3, Gears of War 2 and Borderlands. I love the universe of those games, their settings and game play. I really love the ability to have 4-player co-op in games (Halo:Reach here I come). Nothing like playing with good friends.
Do you have a specific type of game you like to play, or are you happy playing a variety of genres?

Give me a good RPG or a co-op game any day and I’m happy with a football game in for variety.

What do you love about the Xbox 360?

It offers so much diversity and options. The ability to meet and play online with people that you probably never would have met otherwise is great. I have met a great core of friends that I am very glad to know.

If you could make any changes to Xbox LIVE or the Forums, what would they be and why?

Honestly just for Microsoft to continue to improve XBL and get rid of trolls and cheaters is all I want.

What do you think about Kinect, and will you be purchasing the device?

I think it certainly the beginning stage of the next generation of gaming. There is so much potential here to develop some really interactive and intuitive games. I do want one, but budget constraints will likely affect that.

Do you utilize your Xbox 360 for anything other than gaming?

Honestly no. I strictly use it for gaming only. Guess I’m a purist or something.
What do you do when you’re not playing Xbox 360?

A circus performer, of course. Well I feel like one some times anyway. Seriously, my wife and two boys are my life. When I’m not gaming I’m doing the family thing full throttle.

If you could pick any Xbox 360 gaming character, who would you be and why?

Two come to mind. First, The Apprentice (aka, Starkiller). Being able to run around and ripping things apart with over-the-top force powers would be cool. Second, Splosion man. Who wouldn’t want the ability to spontaneously-combust (around your friends) and survive.

Who is the most memorable person or situation you’ve encountered on LIVE or in the forums?
I can’t really pinpoint one person. But I can say that a group of people that I met on the XBL forums, specifically the Gamerparent thread, have made the forums and XBL that much more enjoyable for me.
Do you host any regular gaming events and why did you start it?

Yes. I have been hosting my “Unofficial Gamerparents Game Night” for two years now. I started it with the idea of meeting and gaming with other like-minded gamers around my age. I met many good friends through this thread. In fact I met WALTOONSXP and we soon after joined forces to host different game nights. WALTOONSXP hosts a Reviveagame night where he lists some older 360 games to literally revive. Soon after he created his own game site called http://reviveagameforums.yourme.net/forum.htm and we “officially” joined forces soon after.

Why did you become an Xbox Ambassador and for how long?

It just seemed like a natural fit for me. I was already hosting game nights. Was trying to help on the forums to the best of my abilities, so I applied and became one. Been one for about six months now.
Are you currently a member of any other gaming community?

Yes. I am an active member of http://www.lousyatgaming.com, http://www.gamerdadslive.com/ and http://reviveagameforums.yourme.net/forum.htm

Is there any game or accessory that is not available for the 360 that you would like to see?

A MS personal coffee cup brewer peripheral that plugs in to the USB on my 360. Plus, it should have software that automatically sets the Espresso strength based on factors like which game and game type being played, how many people you’re gaming with, how long you’ve been up and how long you will be online. That would be my ultimate gaming/coffee dream come true.
